I'm flabbergasted here. This isn't a correct interpretation of vaccine efficacy—and that 95% number. It doesn't mean vaccines leave 1 in 20 people "unprotected". https://www.timesnews.net/living/wellness/5-reasons-to-wear-a-mask-even-after-you-re-vaccinated/article_382fb8e0-5bfc-11eb-9945-2315e7061dc1.html …pic.twitter.com/iDI1SOeIxk

Doctors/experts/media need to make clear that vaccines protect against infection, but also that among those infected they protect against severity. It’s like a castle surrounded by a wall; and then, since a few people might break thru the wall, there’s a bunch of archers ready

Also vaccine efficacy is in trials relative measure. Even if you ignore that is only refers to symptomatic cases as an endpoint, 95% vaccine efficacy does not translate into 1 in 20 people "unprotected" calculation.

Yeah, me too. But I did not have former director of CDC on my bingo card. Maybe reporter misunderstood? But the reporter should hopefully catch this even if he did say it. I'm hoping that he said it correctly, article went to "pixel" correctly and then, umm, gremlins?

If it did not reduce the severity of the disease for those who got it, this probably would be a reasonable interpretation, no? As long as people understand what unprotected means, is that proving ambiguous?

So how should we talk about this? "If you would otherwise have gotten it, if you have the vaccine you get to roll a 20-sided die and you get a symptomatic case only if it comes up 1" does not seem to do it except for a relatively small group of ex-analog D&D players...
