Misguided idea, imo. Trying to "fact-check" whatever one encounters (because it's digital) is counterproductive and, frankly, an authoritarian impulse. Plus, journalists should NOT be reporting on everything they can access. News value and public interest, not gossip and prying.https://twitter.com/NiemanLab/status/1359934480417501185 …

Clubhouse poses major challenges for fact-checkers since it doesn't keep old posts, audio files, or allow users to record conversations. https://nie.mn/3aOeUni

We have enough real problems with our public sphere and the digital transition. Lack of "fact-checking" on a platform explicitly designed for ephemerality (which limits its public impact) is pretty low on that list.

If Clubhouse starts incorporating virality and algorithmic amplification, all this might change. If I had to guess, I'd say people would then flee it the way they flee from here. I guess undue media attention plus the Clubhouse growth team may well cooperate to make that happen.

Also: Tech people are upset at existing tech criticism/reporting. While there are notable exceptions, the real problem is most tech reporting HAS NOT BEEN properly critical and too often focuses on trivia and remains superficial. Tech has NOT been criticized/scrutinized enough.

"Someone said a wrong thing on Clubhouse, call the fact-checkers" and Clubhouse's own growth team—and VC's hoping for exponential returns—are in a symbiotic relationship. Loser: the substantive discussion on how to deal with a profound, amazing AND terrifying historic transition.

Ah. For example. Talk to me about how low-zero interest rates interact with how VC firms chase exponential growth through network effects without regard to negative externalities—and how these rates also funded authoritarians for a ~decade—I'm ALL EARS. https://twitter.com/beejoli/status/1361349845601054724 …?

As a tech (or at least tech-sympathetic) guy I think the question of whether tech reporting is positive or negative is not as germane as accuracy. Too much of 'critical' tech reporting is like "electric scooters are terrible cause they are funded by VCs lol" -- just mindless ...

This ☝️☝️☝️☝️ Reporting on tech is hard, because it requires a deeper understanding of how platforms work on a technical level. And simplifying the explanations often distorts or completely hides what's happening.

I'm absolutely fine with criticism of tech, but it helps a lot if the criticism is based in actual reality, not in how people think it works.

Though that’s true for most of what’s out there. Much easier to be tough on stupid, trivial stuff than having to be deep and be forced to understand nuances et al... no time for that sh*t <eyeroll>
