Misguided idea, imo. Trying to "fact-check" whatever one encounters (because it's digital) is counterproductive and, frankly, an authoritarian impulse. Plus, journalists should NOT be reporting on everything they can access. News value and public interest, not gossip and prying.https://twitter.com/NiemanLab/status/1359934480417501185 …

If Clubhouse starts incorporating virality and algorithmic amplification, all this might change. If I had to guess, I'd say people would then flee it the way they flee from here. I guess undue media attention plus the Clubhouse growth team may well cooperate to make that happen.

Also: Tech people are upset at existing tech criticism/reporting. While there are notable exceptions, the real problem is most tech reporting HAS NOT BEEN properly critical and too often focuses on trivia and remains superficial. Tech has NOT been criticized/scrutinized enough.

"Someone said a wrong thing on Clubhouse, call the fact-checkers" and Clubhouse's own growth team—and VC's hoping for exponential returns—are in a symbiotic relationship. Loser: the substantive discussion on how to deal with a profound, amazing AND terrifying historic transition.

Ah. For example. Talk to me about how low-zero interest rates interact with how VC firms chase exponential growth through network effects without regard to negative externalities—and how these rates also funded authoritarians for a ~decade—I'm ALL EARS. https://twitter.com/beejoli/status/1361349845601054724 …?

Some of the discourse around CH absolutely baffles me. There are valid concerns re. shady contact upload privacy, but I've never seen a new platform chastised for being exclusionary because they initially did invites and not open to everyone instantly. 1/2

It's being overproblematized IMO, esp. when so many extremely consequential conversations happen in private anyways (and probably always will), and many of the discussions on CH are not more substantial or important than any other comment thread on e.g. LinkedIn 2/2

As far as I can ascertain, Clubhouse is more like a conference format. People with deep pockets and influence are hobnobbing.

Are we sure clubhouse is a private conversation? The current limit is 5000 people(which they would increase) and that's a lot of people to be called 'private'. Not to mention when Elon Musk was on there, there were live streams. It is more town hall than a private convo.
