Canada. Makes no sense to wear masks *except* when you are breathing most heavily. (I know of gyms in the US *still* with similar rules: Must wear a mask to come in! Sanitize your hands before getting on the elliptical! Then you can take your mask off while you huff and puff.

Rules/guidelines should reflect underlying mechanisms, which we should explain them people so they can use their judgment, too. There's no "six feet" that divides safe/unsafe: there are mechanisms that affect how distance protects in different environments. True for masks, too!

Yeah. UK had an "eat out to help out" campaign where they gave people money to eat *in* restaurants but banned from using the money for take-out. Wasn't a great fan of that.https://twitter.com/chrisnoelie/status/1361051440484151300 …

I can’t tell you how many ppl I see remove their masks in enclosed spaces when no one is very close to them. They take indoor mask breaks in schools. Most of these ppl are trying to be safe, but they waste time constantly wiping down surfaces then just flip their mask off inside!

Feel the same way about running. I run maskless outdoors. It's not crowded but I do pass people on the path. Is it 100% safe? No, but I feel pretty confident I won't get it or give it in that brief exchange.
-
The issue is - do they feel the same way? Especially if they mask, raise mask when they see you coming? Can your breath be heard, felt? Are you careful not to strongly exhale at time of passing? Do you move to far edge, turn head? Runners can be scary. Raise mask out of respect.

Why is it okay for a runner to huff & puff, exhale forcefully less than 2 feet from an oncoming persons face??
-
This is not to say always mask outside (I agree it gets ridiculous when others not near, or even most passing) but with strong exhalation in another’s direction and zero attempts to distance - the few make it hard for all - the absolutist not mask calls forth the absolutist mask.

What about having good ventilation? Say, we place cardio equipment well-distanced and then let people use them without masks and ventilate the space heavily. Or should we just ban all indoor public cardio? (I haven’t seen anyone able to keep the mask on nose while running fast)

No. Straining at a mask is like lifting weights with your arm it increases aerobic strength Who nerds don't treadmill ...
