What Helen's says is what I describe as the "out-of-body" experience of February 2020. I struggled to convince my own friends that we'd get hit and should get ready—they heard "let's wait and see" from almost every corner. (Also, Helen is one of the best global health reporters).https://twitter.com/HelenBranswell/status/1359906767417843720 …

      2. To this day I do not understand why, in Feb. 2020, U.S. health leaders were downplaying the risk the virus posed to the world. There was no forcefield around China. Within 2 weeks of this event, hospitals in Iran & northern Italy were swamped with cases. Everything changed. pic.twitter.com/FTEVTs5bdh

Re: the "out of body" experience Zeynep describes: Peter and I felt we were living three weeks into the future. One year ago, we gave our first talk about the emerging pandemic, titled "The Crown Season 3." (referring to SARS, MERS, and "nCoV.") The audience thought we were nuts.

In our talk on Feb 14 2020, we said we were more worried about the coming disruption than about actually catching the virus. One person said back to us: "It's not as if life-as-we-know-it is ending." We just looked at him.

I understand the early part, but after China shut down Wuhan... And the papers started coming out that week. That's when I felt dissociated from my information sources/friends/networks. I kept getting lectured about the flu and xenophobia—while my HK friends masked up/got ready.

When a city of 11 million people had its exits sealed (January 20-25th 2020), I had the same kind of "out-of-body-experience" and it was instantly clear that "WE ARE ALL WUHAN" and time itself somehow froze....
