Updating this thread started on December 18, 2020 with me and @michaelmina_lab proposing an immediate *trial* for delaying the booster and monitoring the results. We both caught much grief then but if we had started a trial then, we'd know for sure by now.https://twitter.com/Atul_Gawande/status/1377275975050924040 …
It’s like people have forgotten how to science.
Absolutely dumb idea, take it he wants more variants so he can stay relevant on the news.
Guess you could take a look at folks who had their second dose delayed by shortages in high risk areas.https://twitter.com/megtirrell/status/1358812583764111363 …
Separately: NYS is still holding on to second doses rather than taking them from later supplies, despite both Azar/Slavitt statements to the contrary. The confusion: Azar didn't put the change in writing, and CDC guidelines on 2d dose timing appear to overlap. Can you raise this?
Is this reported on? My experience here in NC is that we're definitely pushing out doses—all doses—as soon as they come now, which has really sped up things.
On a recent episode of the TWIV podcast, a scientist raised the possibility that delaying second dose for too long could foster mutations that evade the vaccine. Wondering what others think about that.
Why not a trial also of half-dose prime + half-dose boost vs full dose prime and boost? Easy to enroll (as everyone getting an active vaccine) and quicker than trial of delaying the second dose. Preclinical data suggests good chance of working.
RE: A TRIAL- Fauci says there's no time to complete it and then delay 2nd dose and have any impact on expanding supply of 1st dose. If true, should we just do it anyway? Risk of original plan > risk of delaying 2nd dose in favor of more people protected earlier by 1st dose?
Yeah I wrote my piece calling for a trial sometime in mid-December.. We'd be eight+ weeks into it (more if started with those who already got their first dose), and more clarity on what eight week schedule instead of three would mean. (US will likely have enough by April).
