NYT has new info about Trump's COVID, and my estimate of it *using Kremlinology* was correct! (I piped up because some doctors said he got dexa incorrectly/early because of "VIP medicine syndrome"—not impossible though with that White House, sadly, Kremlinology tad more useful). https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1312821203074265088 …pic.twitter.com/R11rEmBAGJ

It's been a weird year where a lot of my "Third World" habits and skills have been more relevant than I'd have liked: trying figuring out how to import medical masks for health-care workers, reading between the lines during press conferences of a misinformer-in-chief, shortages..

I was talking about this with someone with a similar background, and we reflected on the "culture shock" of having arrived at a place where many institutions worked pretty well, in comparison to our experience. Last year was a reverse culture shock (though it didn't start then.)

Growing up where you can't trust official information & where authorities misinform.. One does get better at such inference. Unfortunately, it's also a fuel for conspiratorial thinking, a related reflex: "what are they hiding from us now?" but without a brake or guardrails.

Biggest one for me was using non-official info sources. Grew up in Dubai behind a proxy and with govt. censors blacking out the word Israel in school books. Never thought I'd need to go back whisper-nets, foreign scholars, blogs, reading between the lines on UN/WHO reports etc.

Stealing phrase here. Also, as many people are noting, this starts before Trump. The before was never perfect, and even the good part was always unevenly and unequally distributed. But it's another thing for it to decline this much, so quicky. https://twitter.com/karolkarpinski/status/1359989584512372743 …pic.twitter.com/oeiSRJkRg5

Also, unsurprisingly, I've already got people responding who think Trump faked COVID either as a distraction or a stunt to discredit COVID with rapid recovery. That's what happens when we can't trust official information and mistrust rises: conspiratorial thinking is consequence.

I know, right! That's how I felt last year. A lot of reading between the lines, networks, figuring out new trusted experts, etc.

Indeed. Libraries, parks, functioning postal service... Things work without bribes. So much positive culture shock. I realize it wasn't perfect even back then, but compared to what I had been used to... Incredible.
