I was talking about this with someone with a similar background, and we reflected on the "culture shock" of having arrived at a place where many institutions worked pretty well, in comparison to our experience. Last year was a reverse culture shock (though it didn't start then.)

Growing up where you can't trust official information & where authorities misinform.. One does get better at such inference. Unfortunately, it's also a fuel for conspiratorial thinking, a related reflex: "what are they hiding from us now?" but without a brake or guardrails.

Also, unsurprisingly, I've already got people responding who think Trump faked COVID either as a distraction or a stunt to discredit COVID with rapid recovery. That's what happens when we can't trust official information and mistrust rises: conspiratorial thinking is consequence.
