It’s not just Zeynep insisting that vaccine hesitancy is the direct result of honest “messaging” while dismissing larger issues of access. Of course hesitancy is a major issue but scolding scientists for truthfully discussing data—while offering no data herself—oversimplifies it.

As in Dr. Taylor's tweet at the top of this thread, the "public" is not largely hearing "vaccines aren't changing anything." That's not just based on what I've seen personally on Twitter. Issues with equitable access are well documented.
-
In claiming that "bad communication" is the main issue with vaccine uptake, it completely ignores the larger problem with equitable access and distribution. It minimizes that in favor of the "things would be better if only the 'broad message' was what I think it should be."

When you hear from Sci.get vaccinated, continue to mask, continue to social distance, avoid crowds, & avoid crowds indoors, you have no carrot, only multiple sticks. I got very lucky, had my 2nd Moderna dose. I trust my vaccine & plan on going to the beach this weekend, no mask.
-
The messaging is very depressing & confusing. Why vaccinate if you can't feel safer? Why mask & distance with no end in sight after full vaccination? There is NO postive personal messaging to encourage vaccination.

Love you both as COVID resources...I've heard doctors/MPH's on cable news shows say twice already this week that masks need to be worn by those who get vaccinated until we reach herd immunity. Not an encouraging message.
-
I disagree with that. We can relax restrictions without hitting the herd immunity threshold if we simultaneously knock transmission down enough. If we double down on exposure reduction (masks/distancing/etc) in the short-term while ramping up vaccination, we can relax sooner.
