To stay that messaging isn't a problem is absurd. Is it THE problem? No. But it absolutely is a problem where people are convinced that the vaccine doesn't work and isn't necessary.

I agree messaging is imperfect. But at the same time, it is not helpful to say we need to be overstating what we know. Ultimately that undermines trust which increases hesitancy.

My problem is that you had mocked and dismissed Zeynep's anecdotes of hesitancy as data at the same using another users' stories of access to bolster your argument.

Frankly, I'm quite let down to your responses to Zeynep's concerns regarding messaging.

It’s not just Zeynep insisting that vaccine hesitancy is the direct result of honest “messaging” while dismissing larger issues of access. Of course hesitancy is a major issue but scolding scientists for truthfully discussing data—while offering no data herself—oversimplifies it.

Zeynep has no background in virology or vaccinology and yet she sees fit to tell those who do how they should communicate on these topics based on some tweets she saw. Most scientists (self included) have been saying what she’s claiming we aren’t (we don’t know but expect...)

Man! Someone pointed me here. *waves at subtweet* There’s a lot of claims here about things I did NOT say or claim (like no scientist is saying this? Whenever did I day that? Plus, I’m talking about what the public is hearing from authorities & media, not scientists on Twitter.)

Also it’s pretty easy to hold multiple thoughts here. Pointing out one problem doesn’t mean the others don’t exist. Access, equity, historical mistrust... None of those mean they can’t be a *different* problem with a particular message that may affect another group.

Finally, the whole time, the thing I’m pushing for is to say exactly what you’re saying here which is we don’t know fully yet but we expect... Can’t believe we’re manufacturing a disagreement out of what I’m advocating for: messaging that’s exactly what you say you already say.https://twitter.com/angie_rasmussen/status/1359507258359439366 …

I've discussed this with you directly. You have made it a point to say that "experts" are bungling communications about vaccines by saying "we don't know" about transmission and then further saying that drives hesitancy by citing what you've seen on social media. That's not data.

I’m going to write this long-term because it doesn’t make sense for me to answer claims I did not make. I keep trying to explain “we don’t know” gets heard as “it will not” unless we clarify. Of course it can affect hesitancy. And examples matter. It’s a pandemic! You can’t wait.

You have made these claims. And I keep trying to explain that most experts are not saying "we don't know" and leaving it at that! I have not seen evidence that this is driving hesitancy. If anything, polls indicate that hesitancy is *decreasing.*

But shouldn’t it tell you something that the “we don’t know” message is the one that’s filtering down to at least some of the public, in particular the younger ages who have far less individual risk and therefore a larger hurdle to clear to encourage vaccine uptake?
