University of Berkeley has banned outdoor exercise, including solitary outdoor exercise, in response to a COVID outbreak. I had read the article to make sure this was not a parody. https://www.sfgate.com/education/article/Police-dorms-outdoor-exercise-UC-Berkeley-lockdown-15937294.php …pic.twitter.com/8qntfcmJ1e

Unbelievable. How this is still a thing!? Visible things easily become policy, but it doesn’t mean they are the most beneficial from public health perspective. I would argue these absurd decisions divert the attention from policies that could make a real difference.https://twitter.com/mugecevik/status/1348771251758784517 …

Concerns about outdoor transmission risk seem to be trending again. What is the risk of transmission outdoors and should we be more worried about outdoors with the new more-transmissible variant? 🧵(1/n)

I am curious to know if you have run across a single case of a *child* transmitting in an outdoor setting. I have not an am interested in writing a review on this topic for the sake of kids' sports, recess, etc.

Nope. Included papers in the thread about outdoor transmission. While it is possible there may be undocumented cases, there are quite alot of contact tracing studies that followed fair amount of non-close contacts as well and consistently showed lower risk of infection.

Do you know of any superspreading events solely outdoors Muge? I don't know of any (one person infecting five or more?). I know of very few documented outdoor transmission events even one-to-one. Not ruling it out, of course, but very few known cases.

No, those aren't epidemiological studies that include actual contact-tracing. Abstraction and models don't work for this question.

@ID_ethics has asked about this periodically. The case below was short on details, but the best candidate so far I think. In any case they seem to be really rare!https://twitter.com/ID_ethics/status/1309356853185241088 …

If proven, this would be the only outdoor superspreading event of #covid19, despite many indoor superspreading events Need to see bona fide phylogenetic data, not just epidemiology https://twitter.com/sanghyuk_shin/status/1309340776451596293 …

@OttawaHealth had a whole piece about an outdoor event earlier in September. It's led to some pretty tight outdoor rules.https://beta.ctvnews.ca/local/ottawa/2020/9/22/1_5115009.html …

No, I doubt it. Chris Christie spent many hours working on debate prep with Trump indoors, much of it in the WH press room. Others were so negligent of mask use that they met with many people indoors on a regular basis. I don' think they caught it there, just were all there.

Last I checked there was only one case of outdoor person-to-person transmission ever documented - involving a long conversation on a park bench in China. Anyone know of any other case? There certainly hasn’t been a well-documented case of outdoor transmission among children...
