I think there's a big leap from "the medical system doesn't take my pain as seriously as someone else's" to "I will refuse a free vaccine."

That's the abrupt step you imagine, because you have difficulty imagining the medical system as something that does NOT have your best interests in mind. They have, historically and personally, experienced it as hostile, not just some benevolent institution with mild neglect.

It's not vague. You guys think you evaluated it independently, when, in fact you actually trust the information. That's how everything runs. None of us is checking every vial; none of us are immunologists and even if we were *you still have to trust the institution* to evaluate.

You're discussing this like it's like trusting McDonald's burgers again after one employee mistreated you. No, it's like an institution that has been actively hostile to you & people like you through most interactions. It's hard for most people to imagine that without experience.

People think they trust vaccines because they understand the science, but that's false. Sure, we read articles. But how do you *know* what's in that vial? Did you see the nanolipids? You trust the process. It's faith in the institution. Smart folks are often blind to their faith.

I think smart folks are building up a web of trust and consensus in their heads. I don't look in the vials, but the evidence is so broad and consistent that the conspiracy that would be required for this to all be wrong is large enough that I regard that as very improbable.

Yes, exactly. I don't have any first principles understanding of what's in the vials, but the set of people who would have to be in on a conspiracy to make this all fake (or worse, nefarious) is so vast that it violates my mental model for how humans work.

Your mental model comes from a lifetime of being able to mostly trust that "set of people." Imagine the vials are filled by people who have been actively hostile to you your whole life, plus a terrible history. It's really hard for people who do not live this to imagine it.

I don't know any of these people. I "trust" them because the things they say are predictive and consistent with what I can observe. It has nothing to do with who's "on my side" or who's been "hostile" to me. I trust mechanisms that have predictive power.
