So, I'm not going to tag all the folks I've had disagreements with for *months* now, since December, who didn't believe me that our bungled messaging on post-vaccine transmission was fueling vaccine hesitancy. 😬How many examples have we heard now? I hear this every single day. https://t.co/AmOgwNgx39

100% agree. As a practicing MD, it's my job/duty to provide fact-based info, guidance and HOPE when science supports it. The vaccines are a triumph of modern medicine. We are underselling them. We need tiered, nuanced #publichealth messaging for optimal trust & #vaccine uptake.

I agree. The constant drumbeat has been "nothing will change" rather than "it will get better but we're waiting for a bit more clarity" along with more refined guidance as per risk and private/public setting.

I did this interview with Monica Gandhi, MD, MPH at UCSF last night about this VERY issue in public health/medicine. We are doing it wrong. We need nuanced, tiered messaging instead of fear-based messaging. I'd be thrilled if you took a look.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9tFO7Ty1Y0&t=5s …

I was totally feeling your video because I agree with you about MH and dual pandemic. And when the other Dr went into HIV with inaccurate history, you lost me. It was not a quick shift or this seamless process. We totally fucked up the HIV messaging and we had to also rely 1/

Yup. We are underestimating ppl's intelligence, preying on an already vulnerable American psyche, & steering ppl away from the #vaccines with incessant negative messaging. Another patient called me today: "why get the vaccine if the #variants already evade their protection?" UGH.

Or “why get vax if I can’t be close to another vaxxed friend family member.” Unreasonable and unrealistic and we are floundering.

The more interesting question to me is WHY are we stuck in fear-based messaging mode (other than the obvious horror show of #COVID19)? Is it that we're comfortably numb? A kind of Stockholm syndrome where escaping trauma is scarier than imagining freedom from fear/dread?

Who has specifically said “nothing will change “? Your rephrasing implies that someone is saying it will*never get better and that’s not true. Not has anyone said it, that I have seen.

I can't speak for @zeynep but as a practicing MD, every day I witness my patients suffering as a result of the combo of illness, trauma, #COVID19 itself, and Doomsday messaging about the #vaccine when the evidence on #CovidVaccines is ridiculously encouraging.

When people in charge continually insult the public’s intelligence by giving binary advice, this is what they get in return.

Yes. I've been in the house for nearly a year now, fortunate to be able to do so, protecting someone who is more vulnerable and I am getting so depressed with the "you'll have to socially distance forever" steady stream of news. I am losing hope.

Don’t! Grim now but it’s going to get better. There is an endgame here.
