From the last day of 2020. I got the usual push-back for calling the new variant a "ticking time bomb". Alarm isn't alarmism if it's warranted. Now it's more than a month later, and I'll repeat. We. Will. Get. Hit. With. This—moderated by our vaccination rates and our measures.https://twitter.com/AdrienneLaF/status/1358525588135424002 …

And yet we have multiple cities and states opening up indoor dining again. I just don't get it.

Also even if you vaccinate 80% of the over-60s, which is *great*, a more infectious virus and sky high case count is enough to make a lot of that remaining 20% sick. That 80% only buys you a few days of exponential growth.

I think my takeaway from Israel is that mass vaccination can probably prevent a Covid wave, but it will never be fast enough to stop a wave once it's here.

Friends and family think I’m a lunatic for telling them that we need new safety calculations b/c of the variants. But my household has now shifted from regular-hermit to super-hermit mode.

Zeynep, do you expect the hospitalization rate to rise in NC as a result of this new variant? If so, when?

Glad to hear this real world stuff. What shall we do besides stay home more, stay masked, distant, wash hands, stay out of groups?

i just want to take a moment to applaud - even if fewer than a handful of people will hear it - the use of ceteris paribus in a tweet. because that is my version of a timeline cleanser, a little sophistication amidst the usual argumentative toxicity of a twitter feed.
