      1. The B.1.1.7 variant could prove to be our last major obstacle to achieving containment of the virus in the US. But it isn't getting enough respect. Many states are eliminating their effective mitigation measures such as mask mandates and on gatherings.

      2. This variant increases 70-100% every week to crowd out other lineages and become dominant. In Germany, it is presently 5.8% (like San Diego) and here is their projection (via @kakape). We are in the lull zone.pic.twitter.com/KaxUQ2yGHz

      4. Is B.1.1.7 a variant or a strain? https://www.latimes.com/science/story/2021-02-04/whats-difference-between-variant-strain-coronavirus … It's behavior is markedly different from D614G. It clearly qualifies as a strain. While we're at it, on this #SuperBowlWeeknd, it is surely a superspreader strain since it is unequivocally more transmissible (≥50%)

      5. Instead of the Sturgis rally or Rose Garden superspreader events, now the virus is driving its dissemination beyond what people do. That's a worst case scenario. We have seen the toll it has taken in the UK, Ireland, Israel, and Portugal @OurWorldInDatapic.twitter.com/8KciqPoDRa

      6. B.1.1.7 is here, in every state by now, and it is destined to do the same, in a patchwork pattern. We can't/ haven't vaccinated fast enough to put it into check. Relaxing mitigation now is the wrong strategy. It's denialism (like a year ago), the opposite of what we need to do

What do you think is going on? I'm having a bit of a deja vu. Last February around this time, people were telling me I was an Infowars-y person for being worried about the coronavirus. We have this clear pattern from UK, Ireland, Denmark... We had a year to learn to anticipate.

We're obviously going to get hit here (how badly varying on how fast locations can vaccinate/plus levels of prior immunity) but it feels like... we're only gonna worry about it when it's too late? smh

One of the advantages of MRNA vaccines is that they're quick to adapt, and Moderna (at least) has announced development based on these variants. But I have not heard any conclusive answer about the speed of a trials cycle to get a booster approved. Does anyone know?

Yes, they are already planning boosters and FDA is already planning a speedy approval process. I'm just so fascinated with what else this amazing new platform will allow us to do—once the worst of this is over.

That's good to hear - I hope that the Biden Administration will keep up the investment way beyond this pandemic and this country. We should producing vaccines for the world + helping distribute - a Marshall Plan for this pandemic and what comes next. Good policy + good economics.

Zeynep, thank your great insight! One question, how do we know that we don’t already have more transmissible variants in US but somehow are numbers are still declining? We don’t have the UK testing levels for variants. Maybe we’re in a better situation than it “seems”?
