1. The B.1.1.7 variant could prove to be our last major obstacle to achieving containment of the virus in the US. But it isn't getting enough respect. Many states are eliminating their effective mitigation measures such as mask mandates and on gatherings.

Honestly, the amount of time spent tweeting rather than doing by physicians in general has become quite annoying. With this much discussion, you'd think we could be problem solving.
-
With respect, the solutions have been offered again and again, and governments and people ignore them. We know what works, and we don't do it. It's not a good faith argument to blame physicians for this mess.

One of the advantages of MRNA vaccines is that they're quick to adapt, and Moderna (at least) has announced development based on these variants. But I have not heard any conclusive answer about the speed of a trials cycle to get a booster approved. Does anyone know?
-
Yes, they are already planning boosters and FDA is already planning a speedy approval process. I'm just so fascinated with what else this amazing new platform will allow us to do—once the worst of this is over.

I’m waiting for the next big wave to develop here in the US from these strains. I’ve been conditioned to expect the sh*t to hit the fan.

Exactly. As you know, we’re wired that way. Unless technocrats with almost unlimited power (think: China) are in charge, we have to somehow navigate this treacherous landscape by atavistic consensus.
