I'm not recommending ordinary people read & try to make sense of all this: highly-specialized topics. I'm just posting this as example of why regular people should feel comfortable stop sharing threads about neutralizing antibodies etc. and concluding the pandemic will never end.https://twitter.com/ImmunoEditor/status/1357682891304615938 …

I’d highly recommend following virologist and epidemiologists and not journalists to get info on all this stuff. There is really no benefit to getting this filtered through journalists when the actual experts are directly communicating with us on here.

The problem there is multifold. One, some conversations *among experts* are easy to misinterpret. There are people whose job is to worry about, say, need for booster. Two, one can find someone with the right PhD saying anything. Need public health authorities to step up here imo.

Hard for us scientists to communicate effectively with the public when you are undermining us like this. Maybe we should just not try. Get the virologists and immunologists off twitter and out of the media!

I do not see any undermining. Agree with Zeynep, but also shows that the message is true: someone with a PhD will agree, and another one will disagree. That is science for you 😬

Yes, but. Given the urgency, there is more than just regular scientific debate going on. There is heated intra-science disagreement (normal, ok), political disagreement linked to but isn't science (on trade-offs/resources), grift/attention (humans), deliberate misinfo (politics).

That's why I think it's so hard. I like to say there's never been a better time to be informed (because so many experts directly communicating/open science) but also no worse time (lack of better signposts). I am all for the former, but think we need to add the latter to help.
