One manifestation, in spring 2020, a LOT of smart people were parroting the claim that masks are bad because people might give themselves covid by touching their faces while adjusting them. This argument sounded clever and “Gladwellian” and made elites feel good about themselveshttps://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1356633389227458563 …

Trump repeated the trope about: 'people touching their face while wearing a mask'. Of course once he puts a lie out there-for the truth, it's over.https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/09/15/parsing-trumps-baffling-head-slapping-comments-mask-wearing/ …

I thin it was because there was SO much emphasis on hand washing and none on breathing the idea stuck around for way longer

And the position back then is still being defended as appropriate for that time, instead of acknowledging that it was a mistake.

Likely source for thus: there's best practice in clinical settings to doff/don PPE that involves being very careful removing masks, etc. because of contamination. This seeped out into the public as "touching mask can spread germs on you and make the mask useless."

Whoa. That hits home!! I too said that, based on concerns voiced by epidemiologist friends. I felt very special to have this insider knowledge. The only thing I can say in my defense, is that I recognized it pretty soon & stopped trying to be clever.

I even remember weighing forth at a picnic with friends - "well, actually masks can be risky." My partner said to me - that truly makes no sense. And I had to acknowledge, it really didn't. Just like explanations for fomite transmission as driving wedding superspreaders.

So regular hand washing is irrelevant?
