Totally disagree on the Hobbesian part. Actually, totally disagree with almost the whole thing. Note the lack of historical specificity. This is imagined, not real—more projection than actual microsociology or history.

Fascinating, what would you recommend instead? To me much of it seems painfully on the nose

Any on-the-ground history of AIDS which indeed, created enormous stigma but if you look at the real history, you see people banded together and did what they could. Or look at what happened now. Where's the Hobbesian part? Nurses showed up to work with garbage bags.

Social+trad media is making things worse. You see some random person behaving terrible, and it's retweeted a zillion times. Reality? Most people are masking despite a whole year of *top-down* polarization. Beach panics. Kids partying stories instead of workplaces. Moral panics.

Rebecca Solnit's "Paradise in Hell" is a good readable history of this. Post-hoc, we have stories of people behaving in a Hobbesian manner, but if you look at specific history—as in on the ground—the biggest repeated problem is.. elite mistrust. Projection. Scapegoating. etc.

Not saying there is no breakdown of social order ever, but it's not the story of irrational hordes behaving in Hobbesian manner. As expected, millions of poor people keep working to make society run. People are lining up politely to get vaccinated. etc.

Yes this is true, a huge magnifying glass over the (perceived) least edifying parts of behaviour with a side serving of dramatization A few extraordinarily loud, distasteful voices giving the appearance of widespread conflict I enjoy going to the office. Reminds me of reality.

Indeed. I may write longer on this when I have the time. It's a very widespread projection—Hollywood, punditry, some academic. It's a story of the Hobbesian public that can, at best, be tricked or scolded into better behavior—otherwise punished. Of course, always backfires.
