I've seen suggestions that the idea younger children might be less susceptible to infection with #COVID19 is a "myth", based on children just not being tested enough That is untrue! Whilst it's true children are under tested, this is not where this idea came from! 1/8

The two positions I see are mostly absolutist. "Kids catch it same as adults" and "Kids don't catch or transmit it at all". I think people don't know what to do with "50% of adult susceptibility but they might often be placed in high-risk environments".

I have never seen the claim kids don’t catch or transmit *at all* from anyone in any of the related fields. Somehow people say that this is a mistaken belief but I have not seen it out in the wild from anyone serious.

Every time a study comes out people say “see kids can catch it” as if anyone doubted this. They are clearly less susceptible, the susceptibility goes up with age, and they are extremely unlikely—less than flu—to get any severe consequence compared to adults. That’s where we are.

I’ve definitely seen claims that children are not a significant infection vector. Which might be true if they are exposed to the same risk as adults, but less so if adults are in lockdown and kids are in large classrooms.

Do you recommend any studies of non-mortality impacts observed in children?

Yes, exactly. Add to this list comments such as, "Guess schools aren't COVID free zones after all" "We need to stop magic thinking that kids don't transmit this virus" etc ad infinitum. Extraordinarily unhelpful.

And in many states, schools are open in person. Texas has made it nearly impossible for public schools to move fully online by cutting funding to remote learning days. My mom is a teacher and got COVID recently, likely from school where her students aren't required to mask.

Exactly. Since April AUS, China, Iceland etc had pretty exhaustive tracing studies showing real world lack of spread inside schools. The response “they had virus in their nose” and here’s definitive speculation for what that means, which is contrary to actual results

I've been wondering the psychological mechanism behind these comments. I can see they get a sense of pleasure every time they find the piece of information showing kids get the disease and transmit it, but totally omit that they do these with a fraction of adults. Why? +

+ Why do they want to confide kids to homes, close down schools? Why do they want to omit all the evidence that show it is possible to keep schools open? What is the psychological mechanism behind this mindset?
