Big brands break all the PR rules. (You don't pitch exclusive AND under embargo.) They do it because they know they can get away with it. As a PR person, I also hate this practice because it creates unrealistic coverage/strategy expectations for every client who isn't Apple, Facebook, etc. (so 99.9% of them). Tough to candidly explain to clients that "they can do X and you can't because you're not them."
