It's the first year anniversary of this thread—responding to the first papers coming out of Wuhan. Talks about need for millions of tests (due to mild clinical symptoms), the threat to the elderly & high-risk, the danger of mutations and importance global equity. We were warned.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1222652819179634688 …

Significant #nCoV2019 paper *just* out at @NEJM. Bad news, which we kinda knew, is there is sustained human-to-human transmission. Goodish news: R0 estimate is 2.2, lower than SARS. But won't be easier to contain because 2020 is more connected than 2003. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2001316 …

The most frustrating aspect of past year has been how hard scientists from China tried to warn us—once their government stopped silencing them. They published so much, so fast after Jan 20th, with almost everything we needed to know to get ready.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1222662053329924098 …

So far, #nCoV2019 has some features more favorable than SARS (no super-spreaders identified yet etc.) BUT @NEJM paper says some have atypical presentation: gastro symptoms or mild clinical presentation. (SARS came with high fever). Translation: we need maybe millions of tests.😬

American scientists probably respect their Chinese colleagues; but a lot of the US political class doesn't. Americans continue to be blinded by an exceptionalist mentality that puts foreigners on mute. Just one more flaw this pandemic has shone a clear light on.

why did these warnings not make it to the media? comes down to the lack of tests and not knowing that we needed to take heed?

It goes beyond failure of imagination. "It could never happen in the west" implies it could only happen in China because something about "their" ways and medicine were inferior. PRC docs suggested steroids and probing very early on. West took many months to get the msg.

Our failure has undoubtedly been our own. What China was doing for their epidemic response in February 2020 in Wuhan is in many ways beyond what we are doing in January 2021.

🇨🇳 sent experts to Italy, tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths isn't because the warnings were inadequate, for e.g. with 🇬🇧 the elderly were going under the 🚍 as a political choice.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/05/covid-19-causing-10000-dementia-deaths-beyond-infections-research-says …
