American scientists probably respect their Chinese colleagues; but a lot of the US political class doesn't. Americans continue to be blinded by an exceptionalist mentality that puts foreigners on mute. Just one more flaw this pandemic has shone a clear light on.

It goes beyond failure of imagination. "It could never happen in the west" implies it could only happen in China because something about "their" ways and medicine were inferior. PRC docs suggested steroids and probing very early on. West took many months to get the msg.

Our failure has undoubtedly been our own. What China was doing for their epidemic response in February 2020 in Wuhan is in many ways beyond what we are doing in January 2021.
