I know this, too, is forgotten but not only did Dr. Rothe publish the report one year ago—and faced so much resistance—until it was too late, China had unmuzzled their scientists by then & when they published papers telling us about it, many experts here just wouldn't believe it.https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1353385306355982337 …

    8. When Dr @camilla_rothe reported an asymptomatic transmission a year ago, the @NEJM report was refuted and disparaged. She was later named a TIME 100 Person of the Year https://time.com/collection/100-most-influential-people-2020/5888186/camilla-rothe/ … pic.twitter.com/keNVF2misD

This is how we spent January/February and a good portion of March, unfortunately. (In contrast, as I wrote in the latest @insight, Japanese COVID task force had most of the key elements—a/presymptomatic spread, aerosols, overdispersion—nailed by February). https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/26/health/coronavirus-spread-symptoms-chinese-officials/index.html …pic.twitter.com/0XPHq4iHxn

Japan did. We didn't. (Excerpt from the last @insight citing the latest Reuters investigation just released). https://twitter.com/MoniMoniOnse/status/1353399986000596992 …pic.twitter.com/23jsdOyiCR

Also, interestingly, understanding authoritarian regimes like China turned out to be a key skill. It's how one could easily surmise they were covering up human-to-human transmission before Jan 20 AND they were telling the truth about a- & presymptomatic transmission after that.

(I'll write longer about the above point: I think it still hasn't sunk in how important it was to understand both governments and have a sense of social dynamics in evaluating medical evidence/claims in a "fog of pandemic" environment).

Timely observation. Many people I know still have not come to grips with how early we knew about asymptomatic spread. When ace reporters from @nytimes saw 2 hospitals going up in a week in Wuhan, did they think "Everyone must have visited the wet market last week.?"

I seem to remember my own awareness being raised of asymptomatic spread when the Diamond Princess cruise ship hit the headlines. Didn’t this confirm this?

So many missed opportunities to have contained. Precautionary principle jettisoned. And sadly & unbelievably, simple cost effective public health measures like masks are *still* contentious in some badly effected countries 🤦‍♀️

Good lord typhus has proven asymptomatic carriers, any pathogen has the potential to be asymptomatically transmitted, why would a reputable scientist "not believe" it's possible? I'm exhausted from battling folks who think their "belief" supercedes "facts". Arrrrgh!
