We are seeing, in the coverage of all the new COVID variants, just how poorly we have educated journalists, the public and most scientists, about random genetic drift.

Take a look - good evidence it's not just random genetic drifthttps://twitter.com/trvrb/status/1349774271095062528?s=20 …

After ~10 months of relative quiescence we've started to see some striking evolution of SARS-CoV-2 with a repeated evolutionary pattern in the SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern emerging from the UK, South Africa and Brazil. 1/19

I’m not arguing that none of the new variants are rising because their more fit. I’m just complaining that because there are some that are, now people are interpreting any rise of any variant as adaptive.

I guess as usual nuance lost in 140 characters. But journalists and scientists aren't writing about just "any variant" as far as I see. Most of the focus is on 501Y.V1, 501Y.V2, 501Y.V3 and there definitely seems to be strong evidence for adaption in them.

I think intense and legitimate interest in 501Y.V1, 501Y.V2 & 501Y.V3 has elevated interested in "Ohio variant", "California variant", etc... where line between genetic drift and selection is much less obvious. But agreed that most focus is where it should be. Tricky to navigate.

The problem is that we’ve been missing the communication layer between “of great interest to the experts who will probe this till there is more clarity” and “okay public, here’s what you need to take seriously and here are the practical implications for you.”

          Replying to @zeynep @trvrb and

In a properly functioning public health system, people shouldn’t have to know too much about genetic drift, even in a pandemic. And getting that much into the weeds, while possible, isn’t that useful. People tend to get confused or scared, rather than informed.

And there’s so much fear right now - especially in times when vaccine is constrained - so even those of us who have to wait are even more unsure what the future looks like. And there’s little nuance in messaging especially about complex systems like the immune response.
