Ugh. One year anniversary of my tweet in response to news of the Wuhan lockdown. *lolsob*https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1220061891613073409 …

So yeah, there are a lot of tensions with China—and some good reasons for it. On the other hand, from the economy to the climate to pandemics, it really is one interconnected system. We desperately need governments that can manage all this, or we’re all going down.

Narrator: "Yeah, most of them went down. But not Taiwan which started restricting/monitoring travel immediately, realized human-to-human transmission was happening, ramped up production & distributed masks and took early, decisive action while we got lectured about the flu."

But Taiwan is an island! Yes, it is unlike the United Kingdom, which is just a sparkling landmass (as @ArisKatzourakis puts it).https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1348004639833206792 …

Only islands from the "applied public health measures intelligently, aggressively, robustly and as early as possible before getting overwhelmed by exponential growth" region of France are islands, Aris! Otherwise it's not an island.

Anyway, that was a terrible way to teach how exponentials work. Let's not do this again.

I still worry that the lessons people take away from this pandemic will mostly make the next one worse.

Part of the reason why COVID’s such a bastard is it’s a comparatively subtle virus. If it had been a more lethal, quick-burning virus like MERS or SARS it would have felt real to more people & we likely would’ve reacted quicker & more decisively. Humans suck at risk perception.

Actually, it's very much like SARS except the incubation infectivity which we learned about pretty early on but chose not to respond to properly. As a virus, it is not some subtle ninja virus at all. It's not HIV or anything like that.
