Ugh. One year anniversary of my tweet in response to news of the Wuhan lockdown. *lolsob*https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1220061891613073409 …

FWIW, that was my first tweet about the coronavirus. I had started adjusting plans for a possible crisis around January 7th, but when they shut down Wuhan, I knew it. With (more competent) authoritarians the rule is, look at what they do, not what the say.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1220060968299966464 …

I still worry that the lessons people take away from this pandemic will mostly make the next one worse.

Part of the reason why COVID’s such a bastard is it’s a comparatively subtle virus. If it had been a more lethal, quick-burning virus like MERS or SARS it would have felt real to more people & we likely would’ve reacted quicker & more decisively. Humans suck at risk perception.

I don’t think people really learned about exponential. Still calling growth “exponential” when it isn’t nearly that terrible.

Exponential describes the rate of growth, not its merits. Al Bartlett really was right.
