5/ This thread is good & I’m grateful to
@GovindPersad for it bc I haven’t been able to come up with (non-curse-filled) language to counter this view that prioritizing populations who are suffering the most#COVID19 cases & death is somehow wrong. I don’t have words.https://twitter.com/GovindPersad/status/1352348686081114114 …Whitney R. Robinson added,
Govind Persad @GovindPersadSome unfortunate confusion here, starting with the idea that vaccine allocation ethics centers on "a tension between utility and fairness." Actual guidelines all incorporate more than 2 relevant values, and no fair allocation ignores benefit. thread /1 https://www.verywellhealth.com/covid-19-vaccine-allocation-for-states-5095755 …Show this thread1 reply 1 retweet 9 likesShow this thread -

6/ This is the key point he makes eloquently. I really don’t understand how people don’t get this. I really just don’t get it.https://twitter.com/GovindPersad/status/1352348694297800704 …
Whitney R. Robinson added,
Govind Persad @GovindPersadMaximally reducing death and disease from COVID-19 almost certainly would benefit, & involve prioritizing, poor and minority communities bearing outsized COVID-19 burdens. Utility & fairness would align, not conflict. The challenge is implementation & other aspects of fairness /6Show this thread1 reply 1 retweet 9 likesShow this thread -

9/ in the mean time, some neighbors and I collectively spent 4-6 hours over several days trying to help one 80yo get vaccinated. She doesn’t have a computer. She’s called multiple phone numbers. She doesn’t want to wait outside on line bc it’s cold..and she’s 80 yo...

11/ Finally a community org in the neighborhood was connected to vaccination officials and is going to facilitate. I’m so grateful. This is an organization that has been doing phone well checks on folks and delivering hot meals week in and week out for the past year...

12/ They know everyone already. They know their needs and people trust them because they’ve been showing up this whole time. These groups and people should be at the center of our vaccination strategy.

13/ With the new administration, I’m hopeful but this is still so frustrating to watch when best practices are pretty clear. The current strategy is not it.

A great thread, Whitney! Glad my point--inspired by work w/
@DrMonicaPeek--that equity and benefit align in vaccine policy--was helpful. It's been frustrating to see high profile voices (including some who identify as equity advocates) frame equity as conflicting with saving lives1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes -
Replying to @GovindPersad @zeynep and
Another driver of vaccine disparities, that Monica & I (&
@ProfHolloway) have pointed out, is one size fits all exclusions of people <75 or 65. As one Dallas commissioner pointed out, "as long as the county focuses on those 75 and older, Black residents will be left behind"1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes - Show replies
