I understand people are upset & worried about crazy insurrectionists right now, but I'll keep repeating that you will absolutely regret passing laws that say "social media cannot allow or amplify" such speech. Because such a law WILL be applied to BLM protesters too...

I don't think that's necessarily true. In fact, it's not true.

The argument: If we pass a law saying "[some powerful entity] cannot do Y" it will be applied to X. That applies to every single thing we regulate. In fact, people in power *do* try to use laws (too) broadly for almost any law we do pass.

What I'm saying is twofold: sure, but that it is a worry with a much broader set of laws than speech; and while one may like the US approach more but we are the exception among the democratic world and it's not like they've all turned into authoritarians because of regulations.

Except it's an argument with firm historical precedent about this specific kind of law. What color was the defendant in the first hate crime case to reach the Supreme Court?

If I were to guess based simply on my awareness of the US, I would say black.

Fully automatic weapons. I don't want other people's fully automatic weapons regulated and mine not to be regulated. I want them all tightly regulated. So.... no.

But here's the thing. We already have laws against this sort of thing. But they are applied to BIPOC and not to white people. So, how do we know that new laws would fix this? We don't. The new laws would *also* be applied to BIPOC and not to white ppl.

There's a reason it's an extremely popular argument with libertarians.
