Question re:K/N95 re-use. We need official/authoritative guidance. Use it carefully and let it sit for a few days in a paper bag or a non-airtight box disinfect (don't wash or heat) and keep using it is my unofficial guidance based on this paper. Anyone? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7724761/ …https://twitter.com/cwarzel/status/1352299319617982465 …

Yes, I'm basing the above in what we've seen done in healthcare setting and recommendations in other countries but I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO LINKING TO CDC ADVICE ON THIS. Please no more of us trying to reason things out, more official guidance.

My question is does the filter material get… clogged? With dust or particles or whatnot.

My understanding is that it stops working when the filter gets so clogged it becomes hard to breathe. Presuming you haven't washed it, or whatever. There were also studies suggesting an oven on warm for 1/2 hour sterilizes pretty well.

I don't think regular people need to sterilize them, to be honest. I'm worried there isn't enough research on the sterilization methods at home. Never had the too-clogged feeling. Presumably there is a limit? I'd like lab-tested guidance.

I've been wearing a KN95 with a cloth mask over it when I go to a doctor or to the grocery store. I then leave it in a paper bag for a few days and use a different one. When it feels stretched out, dump it.

That's a higher standard than what some healthcare workers do even if they are intubating COVID patients daily... (They reuse masks). (Intubation is an aerosol-generating process and only done on very sick patients). That's why I'd like *sensible* advise for the general public.

I used the same four FFP2 masks for months on my twice-weekly shopping trips. I've now got 24 more. My favourites are the ones with proper elastics round the back of the head and that don't make you look like a duck.

if you can German then here's the latest advice: it takes 7 days at room temp for the virus to dissipate, so 7 masks aired for 7 days after daily use is feasible https://www.fh-muenster.de/gesundheit/forschung/forschungsprojekte/moeglichkeiten-und-grenzen-der-eigenverantwortlichen-wiederverwendung-von-ffp2-masken-im-privatgebrauch/index.php …

I've read of some filters that lose nearly all their filtration capability when they lose their electrostatic charge. It depends on the material. I believe that nanofibers don't depend on electrostatic charge so might be preferred?...
-
So the papers linked at top says no, but I'd like official guidance exactly for this reason!
