For me twitter is about learning from each other and exchanging information but at the moment it’s so toxic. People are so disrespectful and seem to be behaving like this is a game to win forgetting that this is a team sport vs. the pandemic.

Have seen toxic twitter chase really excellent scientists off twitter. We’re all worse off for it - lost some important voices. Past few weeks seem to have gotten worse - seeing (and experiencing) some surprising things from people.

Yeah. It's difficult; disagreement is more than fine obviously but there has been a lot of crossing of lines lately. Having observed this dynamic many times while studying movement/public sphere: if not defended, the civil if lively part will disappear beneath drama/loud voices.

It's an intersection between human nature (drama), social dynamics (status) and platform design/incentives/algorithms (for attention). Excerpt from my book (available for free: https://www.twitterandteargas.org/ ) on how demoralizing this was for participants in social movements globally.pic.twitter.com/4MBYy5Jae9
