Good coverage of the latest messaging disaster, in a year with many. We are dramatically underselling the amazing vaccines, exaggrating the uncertainties and people trying to emphasize the good news are being drowned out, or worse.https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/18/briefing/donald-trump-pardon-phil-spector-coronavirus-deaths.html …

There's a difference between individual risk and what is acceptable from a public health standpoint. The vaccine will provide public health much needed relief, but won't guarantee individual protection. How do you message that? "Get your shot and still do mask+ventilation."

"These vaccines are highly effective and will dramatically reduce your risk of any illness at all After you have had both doses and some time passes, you may be able to meet with other vaccinated folks with fewer precautions—we'll know soon enough, while you get your two jabs."

"And when enough of the population gets vaccinated, we'll see a dramatic decrease of the strain on our hospitals, and community transmission will go down. Then we'll start getting our lives back. US vaccinates ~a million a day, and while the winter is tough, it will get better."

That's how I think we can do this, realistic, accurate but also emphasizing that there's an endgame and the vaccines are amazing.
