Good coverage of the latest messaging disaster, in a year with many. We are dramatically underselling the amazing vaccines, exaggrating the uncertainties and people trying to emphasize the good news are being drowned out, or worse.https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/18/briefing/donald-trump-pardon-phil-spector-coronavirus-deaths.html …

I would quibble with the messaging, too. But messaging didn't get us to where we are now. An executive branch with a (stated) herd immunity strategy + a Congress who refused to legislate to stop the virus are the main culprits. In this case, main cause > marginal cause.

This is what social media does. It’s the perverse incentive structure we’ve created. Pursuit of knowledge is only incentivized insofar as it aligns with pursuit of in-group status. Hence the wagon circling. Not many people are able to break through that incentive system.https://twitter.com/rak3re/status/1350435820881248256 …

Agreed. Think for yourself. Although our family all got Covid, none of us got it in our lungs. Possibly because we adopted an extra measure to masks early on - we gargled and nasal-rinsed. Even the asthmatic kid didn’t get it in his lungs. Could be more than coincidence.

Public “health” in the US is a gigantic groupthink cluster-f***. They serve too many masters, especially businesses, who care more about profits than health & safety.
