People are still missing the real scandal on masks. Not wanting people to hoard them was only one part and not the main part. Epi/Dr community in US and Europe didn't believe they were effective. Treated use in Asia as quaint nonsense. Huge error.

There was also the insistence on dangers of alleged “false sense of security” from masks.. I spent months arguing with various expert committees, showing them sociology evidence why this was nonsense. They hand-waved it away. Gladwellian disease, assuming contrarianism is smart.

And then the amnesia! Once masks, finally, became the guidance, the false sense of security claims all kinda went *poof* without people asking wait what, and it became “covidiots” who don’t listen to science who refuse masks... Wouldn’t believe this if I hadn’t lived through it.

Incredibly true. I remember one early March presser with then-NYC health chief Barbot. One remember asked can’t it help even some if people where a surgical mask? Her answer was that she’d recently seen a guy in the city wearing a mask that he’d pulled down to smoke a cigarette.

2/ I remember thinking, how is this kind of non sequitur the basis or logic behind this guidance? It was of course put in the guise of false sense of security, incorrect use etc. It was clear that denial of the efficacy of masking was a kind of idee fixe around which a changing..

Zero follow up or reflection. Not even a yeah, oops from folks who are now leading this phase. If you raise it, lots of circling the wagons or, incredibly, claims that the science changed or got updated and that’s the only issue. I’d believe it, too, if I hadn’t lived through it.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1351304090060525568 …
