Right now, the weirdly overwhelming message is “vaccine won’t change things” and, for unfathomable reasons, some weird focus on not taking masks off (when it’s not happening nor is it a threat!). We face a really tough few months and emphasizing the endgame is crucial.

Yeah I feel like anytime anyone dares to fantasize about what they'll do after the vaccine, a bunch of people pop up to say, "You'll keep wearing your mask and social distancing, THAT'S what you'll do." It's like they're trying to murder hope.

When I point this out, many MDs/academics tell me that’s not the message out there. That is absolutely the message out there. We should have church bells ringing in honor of these vaccines not a zillion articles lecturing the miniscule number of people with two doses about masks.

We tweeted to each other about this yesterday, but if the point is we need to communicate a pathway to the end that people can visualize, no argument at all there. And I agree that many have been unnecessarily pessimistic, including by focusing on things like the herd immunity %

Here are the headlines- there are literally dozens of these. This should be the footnote not the leading point about these. https://www.google.com/amp/s/khn.org/news/article/5-reasons-to-wear-a-mask-even-after-youre-vaccinated/amp/ … https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/01/12/956051995/why-you-should-still-wear-a-mask-and-avoid-crowds-after-getting-the-covid-19-vac … https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2020/12/08/health/covid-vaccine-mask.amp.html … https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/12/14/health/mask-covid-19-safety-vaccine-wellness/index.html …

Headlines. Articles. Viral tweets by experts. Piling on anyone who dares emphasize the hopeful. It’s antivaxxers who send all this everywhere. It’s the nonsense that if we don’t do this, people will just take off their masks—misunderstands the problem with remaining nonmaskers.

We do not have a problem with the currently masking people throwing off their masks too early that we somehow need to spend energy on now, but we have a problem with even HCW not taking up vaccines when offered and people at their wits end losing hope and giving up completely.

I agree with that but how does accusing scientists and public health agencies of misrepresenting vaccines or asking them to overstate their efficacy create demand for vaccines (including among HCWs) or build trust?

The problems with anti-vaxxers and vaccine hesitancy including among HCWs is not new. This was a significant public health problem before this pandemic. But attributing it to bad scicomm and calling it a crime against public health treats oversimplifies it and doesn't address it.

I cannot answer this since I’m not asking anyone to overstate anything. And I don’t think I’m accusatory as I don’t go out of my way attack individuals publicly but I do state disagreements and concerns about what I see is counterproductive.

I don’t think there is a big threat of people with two doses (!) throwing off their masks that requires the volume and kind of warnings I see, or would even be counteracted like this—and yes I do think we are underselling the end which sucks especially given tough winter ahead.

One consideration for continued mask wearing after two doses would be the power of social conformity. People who not yet been vaccinated are more likely to wear masks if the vast majority around them continue to wear masks. The end comes when cases drop not when you get vaccine.

For this reason among others I don't think the messaging for public masking and private distancing should be the same.

I don't either and I think it's fine to talk about what we should be doing months from now when more people are vaccinated and community transmission is lower. But we also need to be clear about the situation we are in right now. It's incredibly grim.

While we should be clear about the hope that vaccines offer, we absolutely need to be emphasizing what people need to do right now. That means reiterating all NPIs AND using the promise that vaccines offer to give people hope to get through it.
