Right now, the weirdly overwhelming message is “vaccine won’t change things” and, for unfathomable reasons, some weird focus on not taking masks off (when it’s not happening nor is it a threat!). We face a really tough few months and emphasizing the endgame is crucial.

One consideration for continued mask wearing after two doses would be the power of social conformity. People who not yet been vaccinated are more likely to wear masks if the vast majority around them continue to wear masks. The end comes when cases drop not when you get vaccine.

For this reason among others I don't think the messaging for public masking and private distancing should be the same.

I don't either and I think it's fine to talk about what we should be doing months from now when more people are vaccinated and community transmission is lower. But we also need to be clear about the situation we are in right now. It's incredibly grim.

While we should be clear about the hope that vaccines offer, we absolutely need to be emphasizing what people need to do right now. That means reiterating all NPIs AND using the promise that vaccines offer to give people hope to get through it.
