A timely article (which conveys the same point I'm making, perhaps a bit more aggressively):https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1351208819892826113?s=20 …

Replying to @RidleyDM @ENirenberg and
I still just don’t know who
@zeynep and others are referring to. I keep seeing Frieden’s depressing tweet referenced. Besides that I see a lot of people extremely enthusiastic about vaccines who are just saying please keep masks on until we know more and/or more people are vaxed3 replies 1 retweet 20 likes -
lots of media coverage of side effects/allergies (despite v low rates) plus tons of "obviously we should be doing ____ instead" (prioritizing different groups, "not" prioritizing at all, single doses, etc) and of course tons of antivax garbage

The dominance of “don’t take your masks off now” and “vaccines won’t change what you can do” and “we don’t know if they prevent transmissions” articles and viral tweets is a crime against public health in the first month of the rollout when those points should be footnotes.

By all means I think we should message enthusiastically, and those who follow me know I’ve always tweeted enthusiastically about vaccines, but I still think there must be a way to do so without literally telling people they never need to mask again once they’re vaccinated

I’m not talking about whatever you tweet, nor is anybody saying let’s go tell people to throw off their masks. The number of people who’ve completed two doses is miniscule, and almost all HCW. Don’t take your mask off yet is a fine message if it wasn’t so dominant.

Sadly, a US senator with an MD is: “If you’ve had the disease or you’ve been vaccinated and you’re several weeks out of your second dose, throw your mask away and tell Dr. Fauci to take a leap because, once you have immunity, you don’t need to do this”https://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/politics/rand-paul/2021/01/16/politics-updates-joe-biden-inauguration-donald-trump-impeachment/4191922001/ …

I don’t like Rand Paul, have written whole opeds about him. How many people do you think are... two weeks out from both doses, are not healthcare workers, and would be in Rand Paul’s orbit rather than Fauci’s? Energy spent debunking this is wasted and misdirected, and backfires.

I don’t think anybody in public health likes Rand Paul! He does have a platform. I know older people (>75) who watch Fox News, where Rand Paul made these remarks, who have gotten their first dose & signed up for second. I will try to ignore Rand Paul if they all ignore him too.

I don’t like him either but he probably got many old people who are otherwise skeptical but *we* cannot reach to take up vaccines with this. The number of people who would otherwise continue masking but will now stop because Rand Paul said so almost certainly rounds down to zero.

Honestly, if I feared there really was a substantial group with *two* doses and was taking off masks prematurely because of Paul but otherwise we can reach with dire warnings...

The ability of
@zeynep to make multiple persuasive logical connections in single tweets so quickly is something to behold. Like the Twitter version of watching a killer guitar solo.0 replies 0 retweets 0 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
