I still just don’t know who @zeynep and others are referring to. I keep seeing Frieden’s depressing tweet referenced. Besides that I see a lot of people extremely enthusiastic about vaccines who are just saying please keep masks on until we know more and/or more people are vaxed

lots of media coverage of side effects/allergies (despite v low rates) plus tons of "obviously we should be doing ____ instead" (prioritizing different groups, "not" prioritizing at all, single doses, etc) and of course tons of antivax garbage

The dominance of “don’t take your masks off now” and “vaccines won’t change what you can do” and “we don’t know if they prevent transmissions” articles and viral tweets is a crime against public health in the first month of the rollout when those points should be footnotes.

By all means I think we should message enthusiastically, and those who follow me know I’ve always tweeted enthusiastically about vaccines, but I still think there must be a way to do so without literally telling people they never need to mask again once they’re vaccinated

I’m not talking about whatever you tweet, nor is anybody saying let’s go tell people to throw off their masks. The number of people who’ve completed two doses is miniscule, and almost all HCW. Don’t take your mask off yet is a fine message if it wasn’t so dominant.

Yep. Masking is widespread, and there is disporportinate media attention to the remaining pockets that resist, and none of those people are going to be reached now with more lecturing. If we had a unified message in March when experts chided people FOR wearing masks, maybe.

And the mask-wearing crowd is not going to throw off their mask after one dose. All we’re doing is making especially younger people (who will infect others) wonder why bother jumping through so much hoops etc. if nothing will change. Not protecting masking, not helping update.

You were right on and I amplified you as much as I could, as in the below tweet. But I do think people need affirmative guidance on what to do after being vaccinated. Doesn’t mean positive messages can’t be amplified in other ways.https://twitter.com/notdred/status/1243918345973501955?s=21 …

Right now, the weirdly overwhelming message is “vaccine won’t change things” and, for unfathomable reasons, some weird focus on not taking masks off (when it’s not happening nor is it a threat!). We face a really tough few months and emphasizing the endgame is crucial.

Right now, the problem isn’t the very, very tiny number of folks who have received two doses and are two weeks out (how many are there outside of healthcare?) but getting through the winter with even more precautions while increasing vaccine uptake.

I just think so much of the current debate we’re having was triggered by Rand Paul right now. I and I think most have assumed we’re saying that we’ll keep doing this, things will improve, and then masks will come off. If that’s not the perception then yes we should emphasize that

Yeah I feel like anytime anyone dares to fantasize about what they'll do after the vaccine, a bunch of people pop up to say, "You'll keep wearing your mask and social distancing, THAT'S what you'll do." It's like they're trying to murder hope.

Too many “experts” have been able to enhance their financial circumstance during the pandemic. Some have reps now. They have zero incentive to promote an end game.
