Have seen some folks worried that admitting uncertainty around onward transmission will deter people from getting the vaccine. Reminder: people are not solely getting the vaccine as a ticket to pre-pandemic life. There's also the appeal of not ending up hospitalized or dead.https://twitter.com/CDCgov/status/1350163852948856835 …

As more #COVID19 vaccine becomes available, more groups of people will be able to get vaccinated. Even after getting vaccinated, continue to #WearAMask over your nose and mouth, stay 6 feet from others, avoid crowds, and wash your hands. The problem is people aren’t “admitting uncertainty. “People are declaring that we don’t know if it will prevent transmission at all. Which is not true, and also a deeply counterproductive message. Why can’t we just say it will, but we’re waiting more data on precisely how much?

the uncertainty is a lot less than is being commonly assumed, which is the problem

I already got a Twitter moment basically claiming vaccines don’t reduce transmission. It’s false & already an anti-vaxxer talking point. What a messaging disaster. I’m no fan of Rand—wrote an oped about him—but the way the “debunkings” are done may well be more damaging then him.

People also want actionable messages; so whether you say “we don’t know” or “we don’t know how much”— what guidance are you @AaronRichterman or anyone else willing to put nickel down on right now? When shld people stop wearing 😷? Bc I don’t have a good answer- maybe you both do

.@rvenkayya & I were messaging about this the other day. I have seen some of the pre-lim data on reduction in asymptomatic transmission - but have not seen anything robust yet on this

“Vaccines with such high levels of efficacy will certainly help reduce transmission; however we’re waiting for more data to be sure by how much, and of course community transmission needs to go down. We’ll continue masking for a bit more—especially around unvaccinated people.”

Yep totally agree w/ that- and maybe I missed the messages you are referring to but that is what I have been telling my own close contacts & others who have asked.

I have been following this for weeks now and that is coming from multiple prominent people and authorities and tons of people now unfortunately believe the incorrect version. 😢

(Also two different statistics are being conflated: presymptomatic transmission—more common but will be severely cut down by a vaccine that so dramatically cuts down symptomatic, thus also presymptomatic, disease and asymptomatic transmission which also looks much reduced.)

The thing I see as most harmful is the messaging that if you are vaccinated with both doses and waited 7 days and your friend is similarly vaccinated, you still can’t safely get a meal together indoors. Why?
