Excellent question from @zeynep and @jeremyphoward — one year later, our masks are not much betterhttps://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2021/01/why-arent-we-wearing-better-masks/617656/ …

Zeynep Tufekci, April 22, 2020: "Research shows that even a cotton mask dramatically reduces the number of virus particles emitted from our mouths—by as much as 99 percent." Zeynep Tufekci, Jan 13, 2021: "Why are we still wearing cloth masks?" Is this what's called gaslighting?

What can I not read? You and @jeremyphoward have been at the forefront of proclaiming cloth masks worked, even going so far as to bully actual mask researchers and silencing them. You should be ashamed of what you did!

can you explain this reading thing you are on about? you told everyone in April that cloth masks were 99% effective. the science on that was total BS. you *caused* the very think you are lamenting now and not taking any responsibility for it.

I've written many thousands of words, in public facing publications, my own newsletter, peer-reviewed journals, explaining source-control vs PPE and all the different levels of efficacy, stop-gap measures versus higher-grade masks. Sorry, yeah, please read! Have a good day.

but in your most widely read piece you said this ""Research shows that even a cotton mask dramatically reduces the number of virus particles emitted from our mouths—by as much as 99 percent." why did you say that? do you regret it now?

do you think maybe that played some role in people not demanding better quality masks, and them therefore not being available still? and people still not wearing them?

I am very proud of my work to explain why cloth masks were better than none for source control, and being straight with people the whole time *explaining* source control. Here's the opening of probably my most read piece when people did not wear masks, plus my original piece.👋pic.twitter.com/dPkLpM502I

Maybe you should start being less proud of that work. You really think saying things like cloth masks block up to 99% of infectious particles didn't made people think cloth masks were protective? What you did was about as ethical as announcing lambskin condoms prevent HIV.

How does drawing a distinction between source control and protection help you in any way? You made people take risks they wouldn't have otherwise taken. Many doubtless died as a result. You ought to be ashamed. And instead you're proud. Wow!

Can we concede that just MAYBE the source control angle was misguided, and plosive events through non-filtering material may have made things worse? @mamasaurusMeg has written extensively on this.
