I put a lot on the line, personally, to advocate for mask-wearing when it wasn't US or global policy and spent an enormous amount of my life last year on trying to increase mask wearing AND I DEEPLY HATE THIS MESSAGE—with 44k retweets😱—BECAUSE IT IS WRONG AND COUNTERPRODUCTIVE.pic.twitter.com/l3UcG7lJud

Except the profanity, is it not somewhat true?

      1) Mask compliance has been high most places. 2) There is no good evidence masks make much difference, if any. At best the data indicates they may make a marginal difference and only in specific scenarios. On a macro scale, there is little evidence they minimize spread.

The second is just not true. They work, best as part of a multi-layer system of protections.

There is simply no good evidence for that. The only RCT found they at best work minimally, but the confidence interval was large and it was not significant. There is also no evidence that high mask wearing places are having less infections than low or no mask wearing places...

There is lots of cherry-picking going on trying to establish that association, but it's clearly not there. And this should not surprise people, given that surgical & cloth masks are not designed to stop aerosols and the virus clearly spreads through aerosols...

The “Swiss Cheese” model - permeable slaves, layered eventually stop transmission - wash hands, physically distance, wear a mask and shut down businesses = less transmission. Each measure is not independently quantifiable - we’re also at an all time high of PCR positivity.

The Swiss Cheese model is plausible and easy to understand. But each layer's efficacy is indeed shaky. Hand washing? A lot of evidence going back years that maybe it's not such a big deal for respiratory viruses. Most find this hard to believe, but the data is out there.
