I put a lot on the line, personally, to advocate for mask-wearing when it wasn't US or global policy and spent an enormous amount of my life last year on trying to increase mask wearing AND I DEEPLY HATE THIS MESSAGE—with 44k retweets😱—BECAUSE IT IS WRONG AND COUNTERPRODUCTIVE.pic.twitter.com/l3UcG7lJud

Are any of these smug, condescending people looking at the statistics? Most victims are the elderly or "frontline essential workers"—poor people, people of color—and masks are great but aren't a magic wand against all risk, including in-home transmission.https://twitter.com/joe_cressy/status/1347298438422147072 …

50% of Toronto’s cases are people on low income and 78% are people of colour. 60% of Toronto’s workplace outbreaks have been in frontline food processing, manufacturing, warehouse settings. If the Province & Feds are serious about beating COVID, they’ll provide sick leave now.

Same goes for the "just stay at home" crowd. Yes *of course* avoid being indoors with others if possible, but if one is "just staying at home" while someone *else* is taking all the risk to make society work and drop food at your door, the least one can do is not be so smug.

That is mostly what happened, and it's incredible that it's happened so fast. I'm now afraid we will learn nothing from all this. I'm furious on all our behalf, little good it will do.https://twitter.com/LinchZhang/status/1348703610222219264 …

I'm moderately impressed by the general take that kinda coalesced among the intelligentsia of "(Western) governments and experts did everything right but the proles just won't listen and this is why things are as bad as they are." Seems to be somewhat distant from reality.

This is exactly what's happening. The least, least we can do is not join the condescending chorus.https://twitter.com/warybear/status/1348706241061806083 …

yup, one of the worst aspects of people correctly understanding that masks HELP (not fully prevent) is powerful people using it as a means to displace responsibility and blame onto low-power people.

Remember this by @MackayIM? Much of this is not equally possible for everyone BECAUSE THEY CAN'T ZOOM TO WORK like, I suspect, much of the the condescending chorus and the people in power who have failed us. A glimpse at the statistics of actual victims makes this so clear.pic.twitter.com/93BpFpjKNm

The "if you're afraid just stay at home" folks aren't staying home. They are out, maskless, polluting every public space (literally and figuratively), spreading disease, endangering front line workers and isolating the elderly for going on a year now. Selfish monsters.

this virus and it wouldn't take long for herd immunity. At that point - eight weeks around - you could come out. I VOLUNTEERED during the FIRST lockdown for this. If I and others like me had been allowed, covid would be long over.

This thread makes an excellent case for why your leaders should have actually tried to do more than 'flatten the curve' until it got too politically hard or boring for them. You don't need to stay home if you've hugely reduced virus transmission

Agreed, we keep blaming and shaming each other for breaking rules instead of blaming leaders. And I’m sure leaders are fine with us blaming each other instead of blaming them.

Nobody is mad at frontline workers. I'm mad at my neighbors who hosted a super-spreader on 4th of July. I'm mad at bar-hoppers who refused to mask & danced cheek-to-cheek creating another super-spreader. I'm mad at people who refused to make their Thanksgiving & Christmas safe.
