to this end, i actually think that watching this unfold via social media was actually beneficial. because you really could see how disjointed/chaotic it was. reconstructions are very helpful after the fact but can make it seem like it was more coordinated than it was

Yes and also, if you are used to doing both (i.e. being on the ground during such events and seeing their social media components in real time and/or later), you get used to the it a bit. Conversely, organized events can seem chaotic on social media, too.

(Not saying others can't assess correctly but being the kind of person whose pre-pandemic research meant discovering an extra gas mask and such while unpacking boxes has been helpful to all this. *lolsob*. It's okay for a feel for this be rare; it's thankfully not a usual event.)
