Heard about the new variant? That it appears to be much more transmissible but not more lethal? That's true but no relief. Transmissibility is an *exponential* risk and thus a huge threat. We need aggressive public health action now—especially vaccination. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/12/virus-mutation-catastrophe/617531/ …pic.twitter.com/I13Y9zlMJX

As I write, new variant is still a respiratory virus, so the basic tools will not change, and they will all continue to work. But they may need to be more strict to work as well as before. With vaccines around the corner, every infection we avoid or delay matters *a great deal*.

I have the quote of the year here, from @dylanhmorris "Exponentials are so cruel that nobody wants to look them in the eye." Lack of more severe disease from this variant is, of course, good but it doesn't undo the exponential (thus enormous) threat from more transmissibility.

More data is in suggesting yes, yes, the new variant is more transmissible. It makes everything higher-stakes and the slow vaccine roll-out even a bigger problem. We have to speed up! People can also up their personal precautions. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/12/virus-mutation-catastrophe/617531/ …https://twitter.com/kallmemeg/status/1347555411940028417 …

Finally, Test and Trace data (CTAS) on attack rate adds evidence that the UK variant is more transmissible: - 15% of contacts of variant become infected vs 11% of the wild-type virus - An est. 30-50% higher attack rate ergo more infectious (all age groups, all regions) pic.twitter.com/wn1O4uYB9E

Friends, the tweet below is from the former director of the CDC (during the Obama administration). I know there is a lot of fear-mongering on social and traditional media which makes it hard to tell the crucial from the sensational, but this is real.https://twitter.com/DrTomFrieden/status/1347632920526278659 …

Exponential increases in the pandemic with variant virus strains in UK, Ireland. I've never seen an epidemic curve like this, and the curve is with lockdown. If the variant becomes common the US, it's close to a worst-case scenario, with a baseline of full hospitals.

I want to re-up my piece from the last day of 2020. The evidence is now overwhelming this variant is more transmissible, and that means we need to be *more* strict in everything we do and that the speed of vaccine rollout is *even more* important. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/12/virus-mutation-catastrophe/617531/ …pic.twitter.com/fqdyWY1XNl

Since I wrote this, the incoming Biden administration has said that they *will* stop reserving half the dose for the booster and release it all. Which is good but not enough if the existing supply is sitting on shelves! We have to roll it all out, ASAP. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/12/virus-mutation-catastrophe/617531/ …pic.twitter.com/GKa9n3Befy

Thanks for this! @AdamJKucharski recently did an interesting thread on how being more transmissible is actually quite a bit worse (in terms of # of deaths) rather than it being just more lethal

Any thoughts on the J&J/Janssen vaccine that could be approved soon? No word on effectiveness yet, but it's a single dose, can be refrigerated, and they've already got 100M doses ready to go. I'm really holding out hope that this will be the game changer.

Wouldn’t a more rapid stopgap solution (assuming accelerating vaccination still has logistical hurdles) be to halt international, interstate, or even inter-regional travel and mandate quarantines + testing for any travelers? Basically a Hong Kong strategy across the U.S.?
