1) If we want to generate difficult viral escape mutants in the lab (e.g. for epitope mapping), we subject the virus to low antibody pressure and then slowly move up. A little bit like after one vaccine dose. I think it would be good to give the second dose as soon as possible.

Replying to @Merz @florian_krammer
Great to hear Florian thinks 12 weeks isn't a big problem—which I heard from many in the field which, as I said, I am not in a position to judge but the number of experts saying that is reassuring. I think everyone agrees boosters as soon as possible is a good idea.

That is absolutely not what he said. Re-read his comments above. He says he does not KNOW that it will be a big problem but immediately says “minimize the interval”

I am not and I cannot argue with Florian! Not my area at all! There are immunologists who think other things on this. I'm just pointing out that I haven't encountered anyone who doesn't think we shouldn't "minimize the interval."

Are there? Immunologists who have studied viral evolution and escape?

Alex, you keep wanting me to do a survey and neither of us seems to have one. I obviously cannot judge something like this which has top-notch actual experts disagreeing! You really should ask people like Klugman or Iwasaki or her below or others.https://twitter.com/sarahcobey/status/1345094869652537351 …

Sarah Cobey @sarahcobeyReplying to @sarahcobey @LauringLab and 8 othersOverall, I completely agree with@jbloom_lab that managing viral evolution is a higher order problem that we eventually need to investigate, but there's no reason it should slow efforts to vaccinate now. Stronger and broader immunity now will only help.1 reply 1 retweet 5 likes -
What that entire thread — with many outstanding scientists — says is, "we don't know."

With some of them coming strongly on the side of delaying the booster, some not. On repeat: you should ask people like Klugman or Iwasaki (actual experts) among many, not me! I can only say that there are trade-offs on all sides, a sucky situation & credentials on both sides.

No one on that thread is "coming strongly on the side of delaying the booster."
