when @SamoBurja says that all bureaucratic crises are a function of information processing errors, this is (i suspect) what he means: the most innovative suggestions for policy responses are being floated on twitter, yet receive no attention in official policy decision loops https://twitter.com/Plinz/status/1345177870688112646 …

Heard about @Elonmusk's rescue "submarine"? The cave-diver who masterminded the Thai cave rescue called it a "PR stunt"—that was the politest thing he said. You might be wondering: well, he tried to help. Let me explain with this thread and this NYT piece. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/14/opinion/sunday/elon-musk-thailand-hubris.html … pic.twitter.com/MWicaJKaA6

Quick summary: not a diver, he didn't mastermind it, Elon built the submarine after confirming it's worthwhile with the lead of the operation, and of course SpaceX is incredibly safety conscious and Tesla cars dominate the safety rankings. She's retrofitting a pre-made narrative.

No I’m not. I’m a diver. Happy to talk about this at length. It was terribly, profoundly irresponsible of him. Yes I have actual information on what that “confirmation” meant.

I'm not saying you're not a diver. I'm saying Unsworth was not a diver but a caver. Early coverage conflated him with the people that did the actual rescuing, which he was not involved with.

Here's Elon posting his back and forth with Richard Stanton, one of the actual divers:https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1016684366083190785?s=09 …

The former Thai provincial governor (described inaccurately as “rescue chief”) is not the subject matter expert. That would be Dick Stanton, who co-led the dive rescue team. This is our direct correspondence: pic.twitter.com/dmC9l3jiZR

Yeah happy talk at length. I am a diver, ex-caver, and have experience with rescue operations. By the way, Elon deleted all his tweets responding to me so you can’t find them. There’s a really, really good reason you don’t mess with ongoing risky operations like that.

Unsworth may not be your angel persona but what he did—convince the Thai government to turn this over to the few people, probably the only people on the planet, who could pull this off? Chapeau. Let’s absolutely talk at length sometime. Musk almost screwed it up.

Reading between the lines, the problem with what Musk did was that someone in the Thai government who was not an expert might have ignored expert advice and chosen his plan instead?

And is the assumption that had the rescue team told Elon that the plan A was not done yet, he would have overridden them and gone with the provincial official? Sounds implausible.

I don't disagree with your characterization of Unsworth. And obviously anyone getting involved and trying to help has some chance of causing harm instead. This is not an excuse to sit back. Life is probabilities.
