There are no "both sides" on this one. There's only a lack of data, as you indicate. And in the absence of data no scientifically-based policy prescription is possible, yet.

Meaning that at present we have one set of evidence-based options (prime + boost for multiple vaccines, not mixed).

As I said, there are many leading virologists, immunologists and doctors who disagree with you—they assert we know enough to go ahead now and the benefits are worth it—but that is not my debate to have. The field can do that. I'll advocate that the UK collect data a la RECOVERY.

Yes, they're thoughtful. And the more thoughtful they are, the less certain.

Again, there's damned little data to get ahead /of/.

This pushback is necessary because of armchair vaccinologists like Nate Silver.

Also worth noting: not many of the scientists pushing a single dose regimen have substantial and specific prior experience in human vaccine development. Even if they are virologists or immunologists.

Also I don't think a lot of these people understand the consequences of a fuckup with respect to subsequent vaccine adoption — for COVID but also for vaccines more generally. That's human factors stuff that most virologists and immunologists have thought about. But you have.

And that's where I'd like to see you really writing and thinking about this question, Zeynep. That's where you have special and deep expertise.

That's the part that has me advocating for launching immediate trials and data collection from whatever natural experiments (which I have nothing to do with, like people missing boosters anyway or UK decisions). Need to add to the evidence base as soon and as much as we can.

Also, we need to explicitly talk about minoritized communities and the ways in which the medical system has betrayed those communities in the past. These vaccines need to be reliable and safe, and scientists *cannot* push unvalidated protocols invented on a seat-of-pants basis.
