One problem is the people telling us to just “follow the science” rarely seem to understand the interaction between things science can and has resolved and the unknowns and trade-offs that cannot be resolved by appeals to “The Science.” They’re often using science as a talisman.https://twitter.com/jflier/status/1345417443909500931 …

I found this
@tnajournal piece by@dots_t to be instructive on this point: https://www.thenewatlantis.com/publications/democracy-and-the-nuclear-stalemate … Technocratic politics “is expected to be a straightforward implementation of unassailable Truth” not “a never-ending dynamic process of negotiation, compromise, realignment,” etc.Thanks. Not at all easy to resolve. But turning science into a talisman will hurt, not help.

Completely agree. It doesn’t work anyway. It doesn’t get us better science or better public policy.

I think the real problem is that we common idiots don’t understand how “science” works. We want black-and-white end results and science as it works in real time is subject to change based on new findings.

This is a great thread. I think the 'science as talisman' mentality not only ignores the complexity and disagreement within science (flattening the entire field), but it also trivializes the serious role we have to play in deliberating over our values and priorities.
