Heard about the new variant? That it appears to be much more transmissible but not more lethal? That's true but no relief. Transmissibility is an *exponential* risk and thus a huge threat. We need aggressive public health action now—especially vaccination. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/12/virus-mutation-catastrophe/617531/ …pic.twitter.com/I13Y9zlMJX

As I write, new variant is still a respiratory virus, so the basic tools will not change, and they will all continue to work. But they may need to be more strict to work as well as before. With vaccines around the corner, every infection we avoid or delay matters *a great deal*.

I have the quote of the year here, from @dylanhmorris "Exponentials are so cruel that nobody wants to look them in the eye." Lack of more severe disease from this variant is, of course, good but it doesn't undo the exponential (thus enormous) threat from more transmissibility.

I am so frustrated. We’re needlessly frightening people over rare or irrelevant things—rare allergies to vaccines that resolve quickly or beaches/outdoors—while inappropriately reassuring them about huge threats coming our way—a more transmissible variant that can wreak havoc!https://twitter.com/TawniKondo/status/1345062121227239425 …

I always wonder if the media should work harder at saying that, while the new strain isn’t deadlier when contracted, the fact that it’s more contagious means more people are affected, thus making it deadlier in reality.

How about the fact that we are tying ourselves in knots re who should be vaccinated first to the point that we are 90% short of our YE’20 goal. Seems dumb.

Complete lack of leadership from public health officials. Where is someone to give daily updates? I know this will be handwaved away and blamed on Trump but they can leak this stuff to the media or resign and be the voice.

This is Republicanism on display. Minimize the control / message of the federal government and maximize that of states. The most obvious failures are lack of guidance, under funded public health, and failure to have a reserve medical force.

The public health messaging for this whole thing has been so misguided and disastrous, but of course you’re one of the few people who know that and dare to point it out.

YES, the news media continues to hype statistically rare events and frighten the ignorant. There was a definite advantage in controlling the message during the flu of 1917-1919 under wartime censorship.
