Heard about the new variant? That it appears to be much more transmissible but not more lethal? That's true but no relief. Transmissibility is an *exponential* risk and thus a huge threat. We need aggressive public health action now—especially vaccination. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/12/virus-mutation-catastrophe/617531/ …pic.twitter.com/I13Y9zlMJX

As I write, new variant is still a respiratory virus, so the basic tools will not change, and they will all continue to work. But they may need to be more strict to work as well as before. With vaccines around the corner, every infection we avoid or delay matters *a great deal*.

I have the quote of the year here, from @dylanhmorris "Exponentials are so cruel that nobody wants to look them in the eye." Lack of more severe disease from this variant is, of course, good but it doesn't undo the exponential (thus enormous) threat from more transmissibility.

Do note this excellent graphic by @mugecevik and co-authors. Anyone exposed/infected on Christmas will be around peak infectiousness—without necessarily symptoms—today. Something to keep in mind if planning to get together with others for New Year’s Eve. https://twitter.com/mugecevik/status/1329817594115846145 …pic.twitter.com/X0Xn46YfDD

It's a struggle to find analogies to make exponential processes feel intuitive. I came up with a clumsy tsunami example. Fact-checker says this doesn't really make sense. I said I know! The perfect example is.. epidemics! And the reverse: vaccination!pic.twitter.com/ELSAecBuHl

We're going to regret our blunders this month—especially with this inexcusably slow vaccine roll-out—the way we regretted not acting decisively in February and March of 2020. So many sad, retrospective papers calculating excess deaths await publication.https://www.timesunion.com/news/article/New-York-s-mass-vaccination-plans-are-shelved-as-15824607.php …

For a lay person, bottom-lining it: How many days on average is someone asymptomatic yet contagious? It looks like 2 but not sure I'm reading it correctly. Thanks.
