Heard about the new variant? That it appears to be much more transmissible but not more lethal? That's true but no relief. Transmissibility is an *exponential* risk and thus a huge threat. We need aggressive public health action now—especially vaccination. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/12/virus-mutation-catastrophe/617531/ …pic.twitter.com/I13Y9zlMJX

As I write, new variant is still a respiratory virus, so the basic tools will not change, and they will all continue to work. But they may need to be more strict to work as well as before. With vaccines around the corner, every infection we avoid or delay matters *a great deal*.

I have the quote of the year here, from @dylanhmorris "Exponentials are so cruel that nobody wants to look them in the eye." Lack of more severe disease from this variant is, of course, good but it doesn't undo the exponential (thus enormous) threat from more transmissibility.

While I knew that transmissibility was an exponential factor, I wasn’t acting on that basis. Goes to show that knowledge is one thing but actions informed deeply by that knowledge is quite another thing. Thank you Zeynep for being a trustworthy voice during tumultuous 2020. 🙏🏾

If it is more transmissible, more people will be infected and more people will die

England here. Tonight we leave the EU finally and fully. Our "leaders" have promised a new 'Global Britain'. I guess this is their first gift to the world, as they fail to deal with the catastrophe here and as the death rate spirals? Please do not follow their lead. Lock down.

I am afraid the curve of the dissemination of the mutated virus will likely be higher than the vaccination curve. Therefore a rapid tests strategy is also needed to get the mutated virus under control...
