Immunologists have also suggested half-dose/half-dose prime/booster trials. I know trials are expensive but there's a lot on the line—vaccinating the whole planet, much earlier. Just last April, we thought we'd need another 18 months for any vaccine, let alone ones this good.

Also: there are powerful politicians advocating for single dose *without a trial* (no!) and some will miss the booster (they shouldn't but always happens). Evidence on durability/effect would allow better decisions on resource allocation on this question. Resources matter.

Some raised concerns this op-ed might lead people to skip dose. I disagree and that's the kind of thing I think most about. I think getting ahead of an idea (already out there) with potential downside/risk and putting it proper context is the way to *fight* that risk. Will write!

Keith Klugman weighs in. (Dr. Klugman is the "past president of the International Society of Infectious Diseases and a past chair of the International Board of the American Society for Microbiology" among other positions/honors, now at Gates Foundation).https://twitter.com/findingpneumo/status/1339556859473227778 …

Too often what feels like "expert/science consensus"ish is actually a few Twitter people with lots of followers. (NOT ME lol!) when, in reality, there is a real debate within the scientific community—but then media leans on the high-profile Twitter experts and make it worse.

Also, journalists, it's extra effort but please seek people like Dr. Klugman—leading the field, lifetime in public health & vaccines—for expert commentary on complex matters. Twitter has its uses but it favors talent for snark and subtweets over substance.https://twitter.com/findingpneumo/status/1339556859473227778 …

Not saying everyone on Twitter is like that (of course not) or that journalists should go find people who agree with a particular view. But very often what looks clear or binary to the Twitter-verse is not & that complexity is reflected in the field in way social media does not.

Two more (pretty senior) scholars (one is a former associate director of NIH) are advocating for modifying vaccine roll-out—they suggest delaying second dose. Less Twitter dunking, more constructive effort to figure out how to test this would be excellent.https://www.medpagetoday.com/infectiousdisease/covid19/90358 …

Example of how polarization and Twitter dunking makes everything worse. She doesn't like Blair (fine) but she has no idea about the topic either. But it's fun to dunk on Blair! And why is Blair talking about this? He's a politician. That's what they do.https://twitter.com/DawnHFoster/status/1341724700301549569 …

Replying to @zeynep
Is it hard to understand why people have an issue with vaccine related strategies being delivered by a corrupt ex-politician who's nototrious for lying to the public to justify an illegal war? Maybe place the blame on the tone deafness of chosing Blair as spokes person instead?

Nobody chose Blair. That’s what people like him do.

People like him do things for personal gain. Nothing (especially since he no longer holds any public office) say he should be interviewed and his view amplified. As you said if there are actual specialists that endorse this, may them do the speaking.
